The scientific reporter Pere Estupinyà talks to representatives from business, research, political and educational circles to find out whether Catalonia is prepared for a production model based on the generation of knowledge. Estupinyà also visits labs at IRB Barcelona, at the Barcelona Science Park, where he speaks to Joan J Guinovart, director of the centre. Guinovart explains that research centres funded by the Catalan Government have three critical characteristics that make them competitive, namely "administrative flexibility, recruitment flexibility, and responsibility for the results achieved." The director of IRB Barcelona also argues that only good science can open up business opportunities.
