Today the cofounder and current president of the International Scientific Board of IRB receives the highest recognition in the field of culture in Catalonia

Today, 2 June, Joan Massagué has been presented the highest accolade in the field of culture in Catalonia, the 2014 National Culture Award, in an act held in the Teatre Josep Maria de Sagarra in Santa Coloma de Gramenet.

The Consell Nacional de la Cultura i de les Arts (CoNCA), an organisation comprising distinguished members of cultural sectors, has awarded Joan Massagué in recognition of his tireless research to beat cancer metastasis, work that has made him an international reference in in this field of research.

His recent discoveries, from the prestigious Sloan Kettering Institute of New York that he heads, have allowed the identification of the genes and mechanisms involved in metastasis of the bone, lungs and brain, and have contributed to opening up new approaches to prevent the fatal outcome of this disease.

Joan Massagué i Solé (Barcelona, 1953)
