The welcome ceremony to participants of the Spend the summer at the Park! program was held today, Wednesday, July 1.

The aim of this initiative –organized annually by the Barcelona Science Park (PCB)– is to bring research closer to students of any university in the world through their participation in projects currently being carried out in research groups, research centers and companies based at the PCB.

The welcome ceremony was conducted by Adela Farré, Director of Communications, Marketing and Promotion of PCB, along with Miriam Martínez, Coordinator of the Research in Society program, and Noemí Rubio, Safety and Health Technical of PCB.

The duration of the Spend the summer at the Park! is from 2 to 3 months between July and September, with a minimum commitment of 25 hours at week. This year, 19 candidates have been selected from over 100 applications submitted. Internships are conducted in groups that focus their activities mainly in the field of biomedicine and biotechnology.

Participating students will be enrolled in two PCB Technology Platforms –the Drug Discovery Platform (PDD-PCB) and the Combinatorial Chemistry Unit (UQC- PCB). Two public reseach centers –the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona)– and two companies, Aromics and Cogstate, located at the PCB, will also host these young students.

This is the fourteenth consecutive year that the Barcelona Science Park offers this activity. In previous editions have featured the participation of over 350 students and according to evaluation polls, both young students and tutors are very satisfied with this collaboration initiative, a fact confirmed by the long-term contact the students keep with the research group they worked after they completed their practicum period at PCB.
