Jens Lüders studied at the Leibniz University of Hannover, Germany, where he obtained his degree in Biology in 1997. After that, he worked with Jörg Höhfeld and Stefan Jentsch on protein folding and degradation, first at the University of Heidelberg and later at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried. He obtained his PhD from the University of Heidelberg in 2000.

In 2003, after a short postdoctoral period in the lab of Stefan Jentsch, he joined the lab of Tim Stearns at Stanford University to study microtubule organization during cell division and differentiation. Since January 2008, he has been leading the Microtubule organization group at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine.
