Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1953.
Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Barcelona (1980). Following postdoctoral work at Tufts University, at the Université d’Aix-Marseille, and at the University of Minnesota (1981-1984), then working as an Associate Professor at the University of Barcelona. Director of Peptide Research at Milligen/Biosearch, Boston, USA (1992-1994), then rejoining the University of Barcelona in 1995, when he was promoted to Professor.
Currently, holding a double appointment as Professor at the University of Barcelona and Group Leader at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine. From 2005, he is the Executive Director in the Barcelona Science Park.
His major research interests cover practically all aspects of peptide synthesis and combinatorial chemistry methodology, as well as synthesis of peptides and small molecules with therapeutic activities. He has published over 350 papers, several review articles, and 15 patents, and he has coauthored the books Chemical Approaches to the Synthesis of Peptides and Proteins and Solid-Phase Synthesis: A Practical Guide.
He is currently Editor of the International Journal of Peptide Research and Therapeutics and a Councilor of the American Peptide Society. He received the Leonidas Zervas award from the European Peptide Society in 1994 and the Research Chair from the Autonomous Government of Catalonia in 2004.
