MACROPHAGES AND INFLAMMATION

Barcelona, Spain. 25-27 OCTOBER, 2010
This conference will provide an interdisciplinary forum for researchers interested in the role of macrophages in inflammatory response, and the acute and chronic inflammation that is related with the development of several diseases.
At the onset of inflammation, macrophages behave as pro-inflammatory cells (with a destructive effect) and at the end, they behave as anti-inflammatory cells (with a reparatory effect). An excess of pro-inflammatory activity is associated with the development of chronic inflammation (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, etc), while an excess of anti-inflammatory activity leads to fibrotic diseases (sclerodermia, pulmonary and liver fibrosis, etc).
In addition, considerable evidence indicates that inflammation is at the origin of and is a factor in the progression of other diseases including cancer and certain cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, such as atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes. These diseases are slowly disabling or fatal and affect a high percentage of the population. Current research efforts focus on dissecting the molecular mechanisms behind the inflammatory response in order to provide an extensive array of targets for the development of anti-inflammatory drugs.
Organised by IRB Barcelona with the collaboration of the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria Foundation (fBBVA).
Hosted by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC).
Registration deadline: July 15, 2010
There is no registration fee for this conference, but the number of participants is limited.
Participants are invited to submit abstracts, a number of which will be selected for short talk and poster presentations. Abstracts should include a title, authors, affiliations, summary (max 250 words) and references.
