Elusive proteins
2 June 2011
In the latest issue of the Spanish magazine Investigación y Ciencia, Santiago Esteban, Carlos W. Bertoncini and Xavier Salvatella, researchers with the Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics at IRB Barcelona, explain how statistical models have helped to define the structure of intrinsically disordered proteins. These tools have been essential to show that some of these proteins have more than one functional conformation, which are interchangeable at dizzying speeds. These findings defy the central dogma of molecular biology made by Francis Crick 52 years ago.
