Stem cells might provide the key to understanding the origin of colorectal cancer
17 March 2011
The technology section of the newspaper adn includes a brief article about new perspectives for the diagnosis of colorectal cancer. A group of scientists led by ICREA researcher Eduard Batlle, at IRB Barcelona, has recently found that stem cells provide fundamental clues as to the origin of the disease. They propose that the genetic programme expressed by a specific subgroup of tumor cells, the so-called tumor stem cells, could be used for both the diagnosis and prognosis of the disease in terms of relapse.
