The event will bring together 650 young researchers from more than 70 countries and 61 Nobel Laureates from the disciplines of medicine and physiology, chemistry and physics.
Organised under the motto “Educate. Inspire. Connect.”, these yearly meetings between Nobel Prize winners and new generations of scientists seek to strengthen the exchange of knowledge and establish a stable network of young scientists from all over the world. More than 25,000 young people from 80 countries have attended the Nobel Laureate Meetings since 1951.
Roland A. Pache, Francisco Barriga and Diana Martínez, all PhD students, and Amelie Stein and Zhanna Shcheprova, postdoctoral fellows, will be attending in representation of IRB Barcelona. Of the 40,000 initial candidates, the organisation selected a little over 650 researchers on the basis of their academic record. “This opportunity arises only once in a lifetime”, says Roland A. Pache, enthused about the intense programme of scientific and social activities.
During the 6 days of the event, Nobel Laureates will hold plenary conferences, seminars and informal gatherings. The programme covers the hottest current topics –such as new energies and systems biology -, and addresses issues related to both basic and applied science. Special mention is given to the session with the scientists who discovered the AIDS virus, winners of the 2008 Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology. In Lindau, IRB Barcelona students will coincide again with Ada E. Yonath, winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, who attended the first PhD Symposium organised by students at the institute last year.
