Born in San Sebastian, Spain. M.D. Degree at the University of Valladolid in 1972. 8 years at the University Hospital of Geneva in Switzerland where he was trained in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Immunology.

Ph.D. at the University of Geneva and at the University of Salamanca. 2 years at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. 3 years at the Research Institute of Scripps Clinic in San Diego, USA, and 6 years at the La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation, at the present Burnham Institute.

In 1992 he returned to Barcelona and became Professor of Immunology at the University of Barcelona. The field of major interest is the biology of macrophages. In Geneva, he described the phagocytosis of Plasmodium falciparum by monocytes and the role of immune sera. He demonstrated the presence of a receptor on macrophages for interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), as well as the process of this cytokine inside of the cells. In the field of gene regulation, he made important contributions in the regulation of MHC class II genes. He also works with PU.1, a gene necessary for macrophages to differentiate.

In the last years, he is interested in exploring the mechanisms of signal transduction and gene regulation when macrophages proliferate, activate or become apoptotic.
