Abstract:
The genetic code is an abstraction of how messenger RNA (mRNA) codons and transfer RNA (tRNA) anticodons molecularly interact during protein synthesis; indeed, the decoding of mRNAs by tRNAs forms the backbone of the central dogma. How the cell ensures optimal protein translation during organ development, species evolution and disease progression remains an area of intense investigation. To study cellular economics, they investigate the regulatory control and dependencies of codons and anticodons in mammalian cells across different cellular conditions. By using various sequencing methods, they quantify mammalian mRNAs and tRNAs gene expression changes in healthy and diseased cells. Their work revealed that codon and anticodon pools are overall stable to tightly regulate amino acid supply and demand across vastly heterogenous cell type transcriptomes. However, there are exceptions, which can explain the underlying molecular basis of disorders. Given that translational control is critical for maintaining cellular homeostasis, their approach can be exploited to accurately predict physiological and pathological cell stages. If time permits, she will elaborate on perks and nuisances when using CRISPR/Cas9 approaches to study gene functionality.
