IRB Barcelona is a self-standing, non-profit institution devoted to basic and applied biomedical research. It was set up in 2005 jointly by the Government of Catalonia and the University of Barcelona and is located at the Barcelona Science Park. The institute currently has more than 430 members (scientific, technical and administrative staff) from all over the world, who work across disciplines to advance research in the biomedical sciences.

IRB Barcelona seeks a PhD Student candidate to apply for the call of Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) Contratos Predoctorales de Formación en Investigación en Salud (PFIS).

IRB Barcelona is a world-class research centre devoted to understanding fundamental questions about human health and disease. It was founded in October 2005 by the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya) and the University of Barcelona (UB), and is located at the Barcelona Science Park (Parc Científic de Barcelona).

The Institute’s missions include conducting multidisciplinary research of excellence at the unique interface between biology, chemistry and medicine, providing high-level training in the biomedical sciences to staff, students and visitors, driving innovation through active technology transfer to the benefit of society, and actively participating in an open dialogue with the public through a series of engagement and education activities.


The successful candidate will work on the optimization and validation (in tumor cells and in ex vivo model systems) of a promising therapeutic RNA tool –recently developed in our laboratory– for combined cancer therapy. The optimization process will consist in the functionalization of this RNA tool with fluorophores and with peptide carriers targeting specific tumor receptors, preparation of nanoparticle formulations, as well as cell entry, gene-knockdown and cell viability studies.

The thesis will be directed by Dr. Montserrat Terrazas, Miguel Servet Senior Researcher at the Molecular Modelling and Bioinformatics laboratory (PI Prof. Modesto Orozco).

  • Grade with outstanding qualifications in biochemistry, pharmacology or chemistry or related fields.
  • Candidates should have been either enrolled or admitted to a Doctorate Program in a Spanish university by academic course 2019-2020.
