IRB Barcelona is a self-standing, non-profit institution devoted to basic and applied biomedical research. It was set up in 2005 jointly by the Government of Catalonia and the University of Barcelona and is located at the Barcelona Science Park. The institute currently has more than 430 members (scientific, technical and administrative staff) from all over the world, who work across disciplines to advance research in the biomedical sciences.
IRB Barcelona seeks a PhD Student candidate to apply for the call of the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades Ayudas para contratos predoctorales para la formación de doctores 2018, to be published in September 2019.
The successful candidate will work on the project Genome-wide DNA damage and repair to understand mutational processes in tumors (DamReMap) (Ref. RTI2018-094095-B-I00, PI Dr. López-Bigas), and will be focused on the characterization of mechanisms of DNA damage and mutagenesis after treatment of human cell lines with chemotherapeutic drugs. This will allow to compute genome-wide models of damage and repair, which can be compared to sequencing data from tumors and allow identification of mutations and genomic elements promoting chemotherapy resistance.
The project includes both experimental (generation of maps of damage) and computational (analysis of the maps) work. Therefore, candidates with either or both profiles/interests are welcome to apply.
The thesis will be directed by Prof. Núria López-Bigas, PI of the Biomedical Genomics lab.
