In compliance with the Catalan Law 19/2014, of 29 December, on Transparency, Access to Public Information and Good Governance, and the Spanish Law 19/2013, of 9 December, on Transparency, Access to Information and Good Governance, we publish on this page information about the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona).




1.1 Institutional organization and administrative structure

a) Legal structure, duties and mission

IRB Barcelona is a non-profit foundation committed to understanding key issues about human health and diseases. It was founded in October 2005 by the  Generalitat de Catalunya(Catalan Government) and the University of Barcelona  (UB), and is located in the Barcelona Science Park (Parc Científic de Barcelona, PCB).

The Institute's goals include carrying out multidisciplinary research of excellence in a scope for action between Biology, Chemistry and Medicine, offering its members, students and visitors high-level training in the field of Biosciences. We also offer an element of innovation through active technology transfer for the benefit of society, as well as participation in an open dialogue with the community through participatory and educational activities.

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine Foundation is a public sector foundation registered in the foundations' register of the Generalitat de Catalunya under number 2245 and regulated by its statutes.

b) Organization and organizational chart

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the Institute and is responsible for overseeing all research activities, approving regular expenditures and ensuring that annual goals are achieved. The Board is made up of nine members and is chaired by the Minister of Enterprise and Knowledge of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

The Board has two advisory bodies: the International Scientific Committee and the Business Advisory Committee.

The organization of the Institute is structured in three blocks: the laboratories, organized by programs within thematic areas, the scientific platforms and the administration team. You can consult the organization chart here.


1.2 Planning and Scheduling

The IRB Barcelona Scientific Advisory Committee is composed of world leaders in biomedicine and meets periodically to evaluate and guide the IRB Barcelona in its scientific and institutional strategy. The Committee regularly evaluates our research groups according to international standards.

The Business Advisory Committee is made up of experts from the pharmaceutical industry, investment sector and academia, and also helps to identify the best strategies to transform the IRB Barcelona's results into real value for industry and society and to detect business opportunities.

Finally, the IRB Barcelona is also periodically evaluated by the CERCA Institution following a mandate from the Parliament of Catalonia and, subsequently, from the Government of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

1.3 Subsidised activity

With IRB Barcelona's own funds, grants are awarded annually to undergraduate students, pre-doctoral researchers and post-doctoral researchers to carry out research stays at IRB Barcelona.

The IRB Barcelona budget is part of the Generalitat de Catalunya's budget and is published in the section corresponding to entities in which the Generalitat de Catalunya does not hold a majority stake.



The contracts issued by IRB Barcelona are regulated by Law 9/2017, of 8 November, on Public Sector Procurement and are published in our procurement portal and in the public procurement services platform of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
