Our group is interested in modeling human diseases in C. elegans to understand fundamental questions in pathologies driven by genetic alterations. Regarding cancer, we are studying the mechanisms of resistance to chemotherapeutic agents and the oncogenic effect of mutations in splicing-related genes. In a different project, we have established a C. elegans model for a subtype of Retinitis Pigmentosa (Rubio-Peña et al, 2015) that is providing new insights on how mutations in ubiquitous spliceosomal proteins can produce a tissue-specific disease.
