First PROBIST candidates join IRB Barcelona

From March until this Spring, five new postdoctoral researchers will be joining the ranks of IRB Barcelona through the PROBIST Programme. This is an international postdoctoral fellowship programme co-funded by the H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions COFUND scheme and led by the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), a scientific initiative of seven Catalan research centres.

After passing through a rigorous selection process, five talented researchers have been offered positions and will be joining IRB Barcelona. Ilaria Dutto will work on identifying new candidate genes linked to mitotic fidelity and microcephaly; Aleksandra Karolak will focus on studies of DNA structure and mutation; Marta Kovatcheva will look into the therapeutic gain of targeting senescent cells; Jurica Levatic will work on a project entitled “CANCELL” to gain knowledge by modelling the drug response of different cancer cell lines; and Radoslaw Pluta will study the structural determinants of gene regulation by Smad complexes. When applying, these researchers had complete freedom to design their own research project, and propose it to their Group Leader of choice, who later later approved it.

The main objective of PROBIST is to ensure first-rate scientific production by providing high-quality supervision to the incoming researchers through targeted mentoring and access to a wide variety of scientific activities, services, and networks. This activity is in line with the main mission of BIST: to foster collaboration between its centres in order to develop a joint scientific project.

The PROBIST Programme will offer 61 fellowships with a 3-year duration, distributed in different calls until the end of 2018. These fellowships will be awarded to researchers joining the five centres that form part of BIST. Of note, the Group Leaders of the different centres can present joint topics involving more than one centre, thus promoting interdisciplinary research.

The second call of the PROBIST Programme is now open, applications can be submitted until 20 April.
