In order to engage with current research in biomedicine and bring life science disciplines closer to the general public, IRB Barcelona regularly organises various innovative science outreach and communication initiatives, such as Open Days, science fairs and public lectures, which are all free and open to the general public. These public engagement activities not only showcase the cutting-edge research that our scientists undertake, but also provide a flavour of the fascinating cellular world that we are striving to understand and harness.
At a time when science and the practice of science are becoming increasingly important across all sectors of economy and society, IRB Barcelona’s public engagement initiatives contribute to boost scientific literacy by encouraging critical thinking and opening up science to a variety of audiences in different venues.
During the weekends of June and July 2019, IRB Barcelona organised an escape room in one of its laboratories. 127 participants in 13 teams visited the Escape Room ‘The #MetastasisChallenge – against the clock’ and collected €1300 for IRB Barcelona’s campaign #MetastasisChallenge, which means to raise €5 M for research into this disease.
Do you want to know what a biomolecule is? Or how our cells work? If you are curious about science and want to know how scientific research improves our understanding of biomedicine, IRB Barcelona opens its doors and invites you and your family to meet our scientists and get to know about our laboratories. IRB Barcelona researchers will show you what they do and where they do it and will tell you all about their jobs. In this Open Day event you will get to visit the laboratories, participate in workshops, attend informative talks, and enjoy science.
Scientific research can be fun, and is not only for scientists!
IRB Barcelona participates in an annual science fair held in the Parc de la Ciutadella. Through more than 200 entertaining activities, practising scientists lead participants, allowing them to explore and discover the world-class research being done in Catalonia.
A science fair organised in April in a Barcelona venue that showcases the latest research being done in several of the city’s foremost research institutes. IRB Barcelona participates each year with a group of 2-3 researchers.
