Getting ready to celebrate European science

The first ENABLE Scientific Symposium “Breaking Down Complexity: Innovative Models and Techniques in Biomedicine”, is gearing up to welcome more than 250 young researchers to Barcelona from 15 to 17 November. The Symposium is mainly organised by and for PhD students and Postdocs from four international institutes, including IRB Barcelona. Covering a wide range of topics, from synthetic biology to translational medicine, the event will involve eight high-profile invited speakers, 16 short talks and 100 posters presented by attendees, and will offer opportunities for career development and outreach initiatives.

“The people who generously donated to the ‘Futur’ campaign are an example of altruism to be followed,” says Elena Meléndez

The academic year began with the arrival of 11 new students to IRB Barcelona’s International PhD Programme—among them Elena Meléndez Esteban (b. Barcelona, 1993), the recipient of the first "IRB Barcelona Futur” PhD fellowship. This fellowship has come about from the campaign with the same name launched by the institute in December 2016 to increase public awareness of the importance of biomedical research and PhD training. “So many people have shown such generosity in supporting the PhD training of a young researcher whom they have never met,” says Elena.

BIST and UPF launch the first Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences

The only one of its kind in Spain, the Master offers practical training in experimental research in various disciplines at centers of excellence including IRB Barcelona.

Donations give rise to a new IRB Barcelona PhD fellowship

The positive public response to the "Futur" fund-raising campaign launched by IRB Barcelona towards the end of 2016 sets the stage for a new "IRB Barcelona Futur PhD Fellowship".

The fellowship will allow a young researcher to join an IRB Barcelona lab to do a 4-year doctoral thesis.

2017 PhD4MD Programme is launched to bring research closer to clinical practice

Research centres of excellence in Barcelona offer PhD fellowships to medical doctors.

Called PhD4MD, the programme allows medical doctors to carry out a three-year doctoral thesis on cancer, rare disease or neurodegenerative conditions.

IRB Barcelona launches a campaign entitled "Future" to increase public awareness of biomedical research

The initiative aims to raise 25,000 euros to fund the first year of a PhD student at IRB Barcelona.

The campaign is part of "Giving Tuesday", a day devoted to charitable donations, which this year falls on Tuesday 29 November.

Barcelona geared up to host 300 young biomedical researchers in 2017

To foster the next generation of scientific leaders, IRB Barcelona kicks off the international symposium series ENABLE, part of the Horizon 2020 Programme, for young researchers working in the Life Sciences.

Involving scientific debates, career sessions, and outreach activities, these 3-day symposia are jointly coordinated by young students from four European centres.

After first event in Barcelona in 2017, the ENABLE symposia will be held in Copenhagen in 2018, Nijmegen in 2019, and Milan in 2020.
