PUBLICATIONS IN D1 JOURNALS
This year, we have produced significant breakthroughs in cancer and metastasis research, as well as other ageing and metabolism-related conditions. The caliber of our research is reflected by publications in journals with the highest impact.
These are some of the most remarkable projects granted in 2021. Funded by public and private entities, through competitive and non-competitive calls, these projects uphold the Institute’s commitment to excellence in research.
We stand for research of excellence, acting as a driving force for the well-being of society. Our market-potential discoveries have given rise to a new spin-off, agreements and licenses, as well as new patents filed.

Communications & Public engagement
PEOPLE ENGAGED THROUGH OUTREACH ACTIVITIES
In compliance with health and safety measures in the context of the pandemic, we have adapted our outreach and public engagement initiatives, favouring online and hybrid (online and in-person) events and courses.
MILLION CITIZENS REACHED THROUGH THE #FUCKCANCER CAMPAIGN
This year, we have launched an ambitious public awareness campaign: #fuckcancer. Inspired by a hashtag used by millions of cancer patients on social networks all over the world, this campaign has reached 3.4 million citizens through TV spots and digital advertising.
IMPACTS IN THE MEDIA
We are firmly committed to engaging society and promoting public dialogue about science, thereby increasing social awareness of the value of research. Our scientific discoveries have brought about great interest in the media, in specialised and generalist journals, TV and radio programmes, and online platforms.
Raised since the launch of the Metastasis Challenge
Metastasis Challenge is IRB Barcelona’s fundraising campaign, aiming to bring people and organisations together in support of metastasis research. It has raised more than €2.2M so far through generous one-off or regular donations, the organisation of fundraising events, the inclusion of the Institute in legacies, and a variety of other initiatives.
