Metastasis is responsible for 90% of cancer deaths and remains the greatest challenge in the fight against this disease. At IRB Barcelona (Institute for Research in Biomedicine), we focus our research on understanding cancer and metastasis, with the goal of turning our scientific findings into future medicines for patients or diagnostic tools for oncologists.
Founded in 2005, we are a world-renowned biomedical research centre with 455 researchers across 30 laboratories. Our work combines diverse disciplines, including biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and computer science. Additionally, we have 9 state-of-the-art scientific platforms and share their resources with other centres, universities, and hospitals to accelerate the development of diagnostics and treatments.
Our prestige is backed by numerous awards and recognitions, including two National Research Awards in 2024, four consecutive Severo Ochoa accreditations, and being one of only three Centers of Excellence of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) in Spain.
