ABSTRACT
The centrosome is the main microtubule organizing centre in undifferentiated cells, supporting nucleation and radial growth of microtubules from its surface to the cell periphery. In contrast, many differentiated cells remodel their microtubule network, to adapt for specific functions upon differentiation. In muscle cells, microtubules re-orient into long filaments that align along the long axis of the fibrous, differentiated cells. At the same time, centrosome proteins re-localize to the outer surface of the nucleus. We are investigating the molecular mechanisms that are responsible for centrosome protein re-localization and microtubule reorganization, and we recently discovered a novel role for proteins of the nuclear envelope in this process.
