Discovery of an AIDS drug that attacks the herpesvirus
12 October 2010
Cordis, the internet gateway to Research and Development in the European Union, echoes the work performed by Miquel Coll, coordinator of the Computational and Structural Biology programme. Coll's research, which is partly funded by the European Union as part of SPINE2-COMPLEXES project within the Sixth Framework Programme, presents encouraging results with regards herpes viruses. This family of viruses is the cause of many diseases, such as cold sores, genital herpes, chickenpox, etc., and the most recent study published by these researchers at IRB Barcelona suggests that these viruses could be treated with a drug for AIDS that is already on the market.
