Eduard Batlle: In ten years there will be a test that can predict recurrence in colon cancer

10 July 2010

The newspaper ABC, with a circulation of 342,820 copies, has interviewed Eduard Batlle, Coordinator of the Oncology Programme at IRB Barcelona, about colon cancer and how it develops from a benign tumour in the epithelial layers. The intestinal epithelium regenerates very quickly and therefore has very active stem cells that can, by mutations in their DNA, become cancerous. "The challenge is to identify cancer stem cells and distinguish them from healthy ones in order to design a more selective treatment," said Batlle.
