MODELLING CANCER IN DROSOPHILA

Cayetano González (IRB Barcelona) and Helena Richardson (Peter Mac Research, Melbourne, Australia)
Barcelona, SPAIN. 14-16 SEPTIEMBRE, 2009

Cancer is a multi-hit process involving mutations in oncogenes and tumour suppressors, as well as interactions between the tumour cells and the surrounding normal tissue, the “Tumour Microenvironment".

The fruit fly, Drosophila, is an excellent, genetically-tractable system for modelling the development of cancer, due to the conservation of signalling pathways, cell proliferation and survival genes between fly and humans. Drosophila also presents an excellent system to study the importance of stem cells, which have pluripotent potential, in the development of cancer: the “Cancer Stem Cell Hypothesis".

This conference presents a forum for the discussion of cutting-edge models of tumourigenesis in Drosophila and their use in high-throughput screening of small molecule inhibitors that can be developed to combat human cancer.

Organised by IRB Barcelona with the collaboration of the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria Foundation (fBBVA).

Hosted by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC).
