The Art of Leadership: Fewer Conflicts, More Results. A Laboratory Management Workshop for Established and Prospective Group Leaders
Barcelona, Spain. March 3-6, 2008
Leading a research group in the life sciences requires management skills: group leaders are expected to hire, manage and serve as mentors for staff, coordinate and lead research activities, seek and manage funding and even perform teaching duties.
Juggling all of these activities can be a challenge, one for which young group leaders are often not adequately prepared during their training as scientists. The success and the continuation of their careers depend not only on their scientific talent but also on their ability to effectively manage a research team.
This Barcelona BioMed Workshop, based on the highly successful EMBO laboratory management courses which have been developed together with an experienced management consultant team, addresses basic issues in the areas of staff selection, leadership, effective problem solving and communication. The four-day course is for established group leaders, laboratory staff who regularly take on leadership duties, and postdocs who will soon be taking up independent positions, leading their own groups. The course covers hiring of staff, leadership and team development, communication as well as conflict and problem solving. Practical exercises in the form of role-play and discussion groups provide hands-on experience.
