Activating Brown Fat Against Obesity
A study led by Dr. Antonio Zorzano and Dr. Manuela Sánchez-Feutrie and published in Nature Communications has shown that activating brown adipose tissue through the protein Neuritin 1 increases energy expenditure and protects against obesity in animal models. The researchers have found that Neuritin 1 is produced in brown fat and enhances mitochondrial activity, thereby driving thermogenesis without altering food intake.
This metabolic activation leads to reduced weight gain, improved insulin sensitivity, and decreased liver inflammation, even under high-calorie diets. The findings point to a potential therapeutic strategy for obesity by targeting energy-burning fat rather than appetite.
