Registrations are open for the Barcelona International Youth Science Challenge, to take place 11-22 July.

Young scientific talent will work with IRB Barcelona scientists to learn about computational biology, big data and computer drug design.

This summer the Catalunya - La Pedrera Foundation will launch the first edition of the Barcelona International Youth Science Challenge (BIYSC), a summer camp that will bring together young people with a talent for science from around the world. Ten prestigious Catalan research centers, including the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), will host the students for an intensive programme of lectures and hands-on experiments. Registration for the camp is now open.

The Barcelona International Youth Science Challenge will take place from 11-22 July, and will offer a unique opportunity for 100 students from ages 16 to 19. Students will hear lectures from leading researchers from a variety of fields, participate in debates and workshops, and have the chance to visit cutting-edge research facilities housed at the participating research centers. The programme also includes social activites, including themed dinners with predoctoral researchers to facilitate direct relationships with scientists and exchange of experiences.

Students participating in BIYSC will carry out a scientific project in small groups of up to 12 participants, that they can choose according to their interests. Proposals range from biomedicine to photonics and bioethics, through to robotics and evolutionary biology.

Proteins, genetic diseases and computational biology

The project proposed by IRB Barcelona is called "From DNA to protein related diseases" and includes aspects of biochemistry, laboratory techniques, structural biology, analysis of experimental databases and computational drug design. The project is led by scientists in the Molecular Modelling and Bioinformatics group led by Modesto Orozco, a world leader in computational biology.

About IRB Barcelona

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) pursues a society free of disease. To this end, it conducts multidisciplinary research of excellence to cure cancer and other diseases linked to ageing. It establishes technology transfer agreements with the pharmaceutical industry and major hospitals to bring research results closer to society, and organises a range of science outreach activities to engage the public in an open dialogue. IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 researchers and more than 30 nationalities. Recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence since 2011, IRB Barcelona is a CERCA centre and member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
