AECC Boosts IRB Barcelona Cancer Research
The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) has allocated more than €2.4 million to five IRB Barcelona initiatives, reinforcing the Institute’s mission to understand and combat tumour progression. The researchers to have received support include Dr. Roger Gomis (MetEND project on how the micro-environment drives breast-cancer metastasis), Dr. Francesc Posas (alternative cell-cycle control in breast cancer), Dr. Cristina Mayor-Ruiz (PROTECT degrader-drug programme for therapy-resistant tumours), Dr. María Teresa Blasco (role of the MAF gene in proliferation), and Dr. Ana Domostegui (novel molecules that uncover new therapeutic targets).
By investing in both basic mechanisms and translational strategies, AECC funding accelerates the pipeline from discovery to patient benefit. The projects tackle metastasis—the major cause of cancer mortality—while pioneering targeted protein degradation and precision-medicine approaches, thereby strengthening IRB Barcelona’s leadership and giving clinicians new tools to improve outcomes for people living with cancer.
