Grand Challenges Target Childhood Cancers

Scientific projects

Dr. Cristina Mayor-Ruiz has joined the global PROTECT consortium—one of the five new teams selected by the Cancer Grand Challenges program—to develop targeted degrader drugs against pediatric solid tumors. The interdisciplinary group will receive up to $25 million over five years, with nearly €600,000 contributed by the Spanish Association Against Cancer.

Dr. Mayor-Ruiz brings expertise in targeted protein degradation, a strategy that dismantles previously “undruggable” cancer targets. Applying this approach to childhood cancers aims to overcome a critical plateau in survival rates and offer groundbreaking treatments to young patients who currently lack effective options.
