”la Caixa” Backs Cancer Breakthroughs
Through its CaixaResearch Health call, ”la Caixa” Foundation has funded three IRB Barcelona projects that address some of the deadliest tumour types. Dr. Roger Gomis has received support to decipher how metastatic breast-cancer cells retain the plasticity needed to seed secondary lesions, while Dr. Eduard Batlle has secured backing to stop colorectal-cancer cells from lying dormant and later spreading to the liver or lung. A third grant has gone to Dr. María J. Macias, whose team is deploying AI-driven transcriptomics to predict—and ultimately prevent—recurrence in endometrial-cancer patients.
By underwriting cutting-edge basic and translational research, la Caixa is accelerating the development of new diagnostic tools and anti-metastatic therapies that could improve survival across breast, colon and endometrial cancers. The initiative also links the scientists to the foundation’s technology-transfer network, helping laboratory discoveries advance more quickly toward the clinic for the benefit of patients.
