The Metastasis Challenge (El Repte Metàstasi) is a call from IRB Barcelona to the whole of society to combat metastasis.

We aim to involve citizens, foundations, and companies to raise five million euros that will allow us to accelerate our cancer research by attracting new talent, acquiring cutting-edge technology, and opening new laboratories. Cancer moves fast and does not wait. Time matters.

Metastasis is the expansion of the first cancer that appears in the body (primary cancer) to different organs of the body, which are often vital organs such as the lung, the liver, or the brain.

It is also the major outstanding challenge in overcoming this disease. If we haven't achieved it yet, despite the remarkable advances that research has brought about in the survival and quality of life of patients, it is because many of these advances have been focused on primary tumorus, which we understand better every day. In some types of cancer, we already know how to prevent, diagnose, and treat them.

But metastasis is an exception. It still remains largely unknown. Metastatic cells acquire a series of properties—such as becoming invisible to the immune system—that make them very difficult to detect, stop, and cure.

Uncovering all the secrets of metastasis is one of the great scientific challenges of this century. Now that we are close to achieving the first fundraising goal we set, we invite you to make your donation and join the Metastasis Challenge.
