Researcher Ernest Giralt will explain the importance of the discovery of "green fluorescent protein".

The head of the Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Programme of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), Ernest Giralt, will participate in the conference series, "The 2008 Nobel Prizes", organized by the Catalan Academy (IEC). The series invites local scientific experts to discuss the discoveries that have led to the awarding of the acclaimed prize by the Nobel Academy in Sweden.

Giralt will explain the advances that led to the discovery of "green fluorescent protein" by researchers Osamu Shimomura, Martin Chalfie and Roger Y. Tsien, this year's recipients of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Green fluorescent protein, a protein originating from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria, helps researchers to study biological and pharmalogical processes that were previously unable to be studied, and to gain new insight into diseases such as cancer and Alzheimers.

Ernest Giralt will give his talk on Thursday, December 18 at 7 pm at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (calle del Carme, 47) in Barcelona. The conference series is open to the general public and is free.
