Emeritus Professor (Inorganic and Organic Chemistry Dept. - UB)
IRB Barcelona Emeritus Professor (2020–present). Emeritus Professor (Inorganic and Organic Chemistry Dept.), University of Barcelona, Spain. Head of the Peptides and Proteins Laboratory at IRB Barcelona (2005–2020).
His major interests lied in the field of peptide synthesis and structure determination, in particular using NMR to the study of complex molecular recognition processes, with an emphasis on the design of specific ligands for interaction with protein surfaces, related to possible therapeutic uses. His research has included new drug delivery systems for the treatment of diseases of the central nervous system.
He published around 450 papers, 20 patents, numerous review articles, and several books that have become a reference in the field of peptide chemistry. He is one of the founding members of the European Peptide Society. In 2011, he received the National Research Award from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. He has been also awarded, among others, the Premi Ciutat de Barcelona (2014), the Max Bergmann Medal (2014) and the Josef Rudinger Memorial Lecture Award (2014) by the European Peptide Society (EPS), the Novartis Chemistry Lectureship Award (2012), the Dimitrios Theodoropoulos Award (2010) and the Leonidas Zervas Award (1994).
