BBVA Supports Protein Disorder Research

Scientific projects

The BBVA Foundation has awarded a Fundamentos Programme grant to IRB Barcelona researcher Dr. Xavier Salvatella, in collaboration with Dr. Michael Krieg (ICFO), to investigate how intrinsically disordered proteins behave in neuronal cells. The project aims to unravel how pH regulates the assembly and activity of these molecules, thereby providing new insights into a class of proteins that play key roles in neurobiology and disease.

The funding supports work to understand how these flexible proteins form transient structures that influence cellular function in the brain. This research seeks to strengthen fundamental insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal regulation, opening new avenues for exploring diseases associated with protein disorder, including neurodegeneration and cancer.
