  • The project, in collaboration with ICFO, will study how pH regulates the assembly and activity of disordered proteins in neuronal cells.
  • The BBVA Foundation has awarded 12 grants through the Fundamentos Programme, with a total budget of €3 M to promote basic science.

The BBVA Foundation has awarded one of its Fundamentos Programme grants to Dr. Xavier Salvatella, head of the Molecular Biophysics Laboratory at IRB Barcelona and ICREA professor. The project, co-led with Dr. Michael Krieg (ICFO), will explore the role of disordered proteins in neuronal cells and how pH regulates their assembly and biological activity.

The BBVA Foundation has selected a total of 12 high-level research projects in the fields of Physics and Chemistry, Biology and Biomedicine, and Engineering. With a budget of €3 M, the call aims to promote fundamental and exploratory science. Each project will receive up to €250,000 and will run over a period of three years.

“This new project will allow us to answer fundamental questions about how disordered proteins work and how they influence the biology of neuronal cells,” explains Dr. Salvatella.

About the BBVA Foundation

About IRB Barcelona

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) pursues a society free of disease. To this end, it conducts multidisciplinary research of excellence to cure cancer and other diseases linked to ageing. It establishes technology transfer agreements with the pharmaceutical industry and major hospitals to bring research results closer to society, and organises a range of science outreach activities to engage the public in an open dialogue. IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 researchers and more than 30 nationalities. Recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence since 2011, IRB Barcelona is a CERCA centre and member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
