Biostatistics / Bioinformatics Unit: Get started on Statistical Concepts, Experimental Design and Exploratory Tools

26 nov. 18

Scientists at IRB Barcelona are supported by an extensive range of common core facilities that provide state-of-the-art technologies and scientific services. The mission of the Biostatistics/Bioinformatics Unit is to conduct collaborative research and to provide consultation and quantitative research resources to all IRB Barcelona research groups.

We assist scientists by providing both short and long-term consultancy services in the following areas:

• Experimental design: sample size, study design, planning of statistical methodology • Data analysis: clinical or biomedical databases, genomics data • Assistance with statistical methodology in own or others’ research • Software: help in using software, development of software to meet special data analysis or study design needs

Programme

The  workshop led by our Biostatistics/Bioinformatics Unit will give you an overview of the unit, an introduction to basic statistical concepts, and hands-on experience of the tools available on the intranet.

After a short introduction to the unit - who they are, what they do and don’t, and how to approach them - the workshop will present the basic statistical concepts needed to understand and communicate biostatistical analyses. Furthermore, it will highlight the key elements of experimental design: initial setup and planning of your experiment, characteristics to take into account, how to correctly pose the question that your experiment should answer, and the steps required to ensure successful analysis.
Finally, the workshop will present the tools available on our intranet, and public databases and tips on how to make the most of them.

09.30 – 11.00 – Overview of the Biostatistics Unit and basic statistical concepts
Camille Stephan-Otto Attolini - IRB Barcelona Facility Manager - and Toni Berenguer - Senior Research Officer at IRB Barcelona

11.00 - 12.00 – Key elements of Experimental Design
Toni Berenguer – Senior Research Officer at IRB Barcelona and Adrià Caballe– Research Officer at IRB Barcelona

12.00 – 12.20 –   COFFEE BREAK

12.20 – 14.00 – Hands-on experience with Biostatistics tools
Oscar Reina – Senior Research Officer at IRB Barcelona

Speakers

Camille Stephan-Otto Attolini - IRB Barcelona  Facility Manager

Camille has a degree in pure mathematics (UNAM, Mexico, 2002) and a PhD in biomathematics from the University of Vienna (2006). Her doctoral research was devoted to the relationship between genotype and phenotype and its impact on the origin of life and evolution. She moved to MSKCC in New York for a postdoctoral position in mathematical modeling of cancer as an evolutionary process. She joined the biostatistics and bioinformatics unit at IRB in 2010, performed as acting manager since June 2013 and was recently appointed manager of the facility.

Toni Berenguer – Senior Research Officer at IRB Barcelona

MSc in Statistics and Operations Reseach (UPC) - Bioinformatics and Biostatistics
Toni is a Biostatistician / Biomedical Data Scientist. His approach to data analysis lies on a strong background in Applied Statistics and a proper understanding of the biological or clinical problem underlying the data, a profile that has been shaped by near 15 years of experience as a consultant and an assistant in Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Biomedicine research. These perspective are enriched by skills acquired from fields closely related to the Statistical Science, such as Machine Learning, Bioinformatics, Database Design and Quering, and Visualization of High-dimensional Data

Oscar Reina – Senior Research Officer at IRB Barcelona.

PhD in Biomedicine (UPF)

MSc Computer Science (UPC) / Developmental Biology and Genetics (UB)
Oscar has combined the experience acquired as a Computer Scientist with a formal educational background in biology and genetics. He recently finished his PhD in Biomedicine at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, working in the development of computational methods for visualization and functional analysis of epigenomics data.

Adrià Caballe– Research Officer at IRB Barcelona.

PhD in Statistics  (UoE) / MSc in Statistics and Operational research (UPC)

Adria’s background is purely in Data Science, as he studied both bachelor’s degree and master in statistics. He has recently completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh developing statistical methods for high dimensional data. In the IRB, he’s employing and developing statistical and bioinformatics tools for omics data analysis.
