Building on our previous work on mutant clone dynamics in early tumorigenesis, my laboratory has now revealed how nascent tumour cells actively remodel their microenvironment to create a mesenchymal niche that promotes tumour persistence and progression. Our recent contributions establish tumour-stroma crosstalk as a critical determinant of the earliest stages of cancer development and identify the precancerous niche as a potential target for cancer prevention.
