Presentation
Organizer: IRB BioMed Seminars
Date / Time: Friday, October 24 at 12:00
Place: Auditorium
Speaker: Professor Maria Mittelbrunn, Head of Immunometabolism and Inflammation Lab, Severo Ochoa Center for Molecular Biology (CBM), Spanish National Research Council (CSIC)
Host: Dr. Ana Victoria Lechuga Vieco, Junior Group Leader. IRB Barcelona - Mitochondrial Biology and Tissue Regeneration Lab - Aging and Metabolism Programme.
Immunosenescence not only increases susceptibility to infections, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and reducesvaccine efficacy in the elderly, but also contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation (inflammaging), therebyelevating the risk of multiple age-associated disorders. Our previous research demonstrated that a mouse model withpremature immunosenescence exhibits signs of accelerated aging, underscoring the pivotal role of T cells inpreserving systemic homeostasis. These findings position T cells at the intersection of inflammation, senescence, andaging.
In this presentation, we will unravel the molecular mechanisms by which aged immune cells fuel inflammaging andage-related pathologies, and we will explore emerging therapeutic strategies aimed at promoting healthy aging.Notably, we are developing approaches to rejuvenate aged T cells and reverse immunosenescence. By integratinggenetic, cellular, pharmacological, and nutritional interventions, we seek to restore T cell functionality, with the ultimategoal of enhancing immune competence to support healthy aging.
IMPORTANT: For attendees outside the PCB community you must register at least 24h before the seminar
The weekly seminars at IRB Barcelona are scientific events primarily addressed to the Institute’s research community and professionals in the biomedical field. Attendance is intended exclusively for individuals with a genuine and justified scientific interest in the seminar content. Registration should not be used to request supporting documents for visa or immigration purposes. For participants residing outside Spain, in-person attendance requires a formal invitation issued by an IRB Barcelona research group or department. Without such an invitation, access to the institute cannot be guaranteed. IRB Barcelona reserves the right to review and verify all seminar registrations.
