Speaker: Prof. Dr. Markus Zweckstetter heads the senior research group “Structural Biology in Dementia” at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE). In addition, he is a professor at the University Medical School of Göttingen and leads a research group at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany. His research interests are NMR spectroscopy, structural biology and neurodegenerative diseases. Of particular interest are intrinsically disordered proteins, liquid-liquid phase separation and membrane proteins. Markus graduated with distinction in Physics (1996) from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and performed his PhD studies at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany. Following post-doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA (1999-2001), with Adriaan Bax, he was awarded a DFG Emmy-Noether research group to start his independent career at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (2001). In 2012, he was appointed as W3 professor at the University Medical School Göttingen and started a research group at DZNE. Markus already received two ERC grants, ERC consolidator phase in 2011 and an ERC Advanced Grant in 2018.

Barcelona BioMed Conferences provide a new platform where leading researchers can meet to present and discuss breakthroughs in several fields of the biomedical sciences. The conferences aim to provide a highly-focused think-tank atmosphere for a select group of participants. About twenty speakers, chosen from among the top international researchers in their field, are joined by a limited number of participants, selected on the basis of their scientific experience, for an intensive three-day hands-on discussion of latest research in their field.

Leading international scientists from different areas of the biomedical sciences are invited to present and discuss their results and ideas in a series of weekly seminars. These seminars allow IRB Barcelona researchers and the local scientific community to learn about the latest developments in the life sciences, and provide an opportunity for direct contact with each seminar speaker. Barcelona BioMed Seminars are open to the scientific community, capacity permitting.

Barcelona BioMed Workshops aim to provide an important training mechanism whereby scientists at all levels can keep abreast of the latest tools and techniques used in their fields. The workshops host expert speakers and trainers from basic research and industry who provide theoretical background and hands-on practical training for small groups of participants. Topics cover a wide range of areas in basic and applied research, and related laboratory activities

Crazy about biomedicine

Barcelona BioMed Forum activities bring together members of our scientific community, scholars from other disciplines as well as members of the public for multidisciplinary debate about issues related to biomedical science with the ultimate goal of bringing science and society closer together.

The PhD Student Symposium is an event organised biennially by IRB Barcelona PhD students. Young scientists are given the opportunity to participate in all the aspects of designing and managing a complex scientific event. Events have taken in place in 2009, 2011 and 2013 and the next one will be in 2015. Nobel-Prize winners and top scientists meet and discuss with younger researchers cutting-edge and interdisciplinary themes in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
