Title: "More than a just powerhouse: new mitochondrial mechanisms in health and disease."

Host: Marco Milán, PhD - Programme Chair - Group Leader - Development and Growth Control LAB - IRB Barcelona - MOD Programme

Abstract:

Mitochondria are commonly known as the powerhouse of the cell, as they transform the energy contained in nutrients into ATP to fuel vital biochemical reactions. However, mitochondria are not just powerhouses and they do not remain static and unchanged over time. Mitochondria have their own life-cycle, with an incredible capacity to adapt to environmental stressors and generate signals that can model of the transcriptional landscape of a cell. Mitochondrial transporters and the interaction of mitochondria with other organelles have emerged as major mechanisms determining their bioenergetic and signaling activities to enable adaptation. In this talk, I will discuss these mitochondrial mechanisms and how they control redox, lipid metabolism and inflammation in health and disease.
