Report in La Vanguardia on how researchers go about discovering new compounds with therapeutic potential from the marine environment. The article makes reference a study performed by former IRB Barcelona researcher Mercedes Álvarez on baringolin, a molecule with antibiotic activity obtained from a marine microorganism off the coast of Alicante. Compounds of marine origin with biomedical interest arise due to the large number of diverse organisms that inhabit this ecosystem and the diversity of conditions to which they must adapt.
