The Barcelona research centre comprises 200 scientists involved in five research programmes
The newspaper El Pais explains the refoundation of IRB Barcelona and its new legal status. The newspaper reports that the research undertaken at IRB Barcelona is organized into five programmes, defined on the basis of scientific opportunity and fields of pre-existing excellence and those that are considered to be most promising. The programmes are focused on the following fields: Cell and Developmental Biology; Structural and Computational Biology; Molecular Medicine, Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, and Translational and Applied Oncology. The latter will include the “Tumour Metastasis Research Laboratory” (METLAB), designed by Joan Massagué.

Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence, a seal that was awarded in 2011.
