Post-doctoral fellow Jelena Urosevic receives funding for two years.

The researcher Jelena Urosevic (Serbia, 1977), a post-doctoral fellow with the Growth Control and Cancer Metastasis lab headed by Roger Gomis, has received funding from the Fundación Olga Torres (FOT) to develop a project on colon cancer during 2013 and 2014. The 60,000 euros of the award will allow progression of the study “Identification and characterization of genes associated with metastasis in colon cancer”. Dr. Urosevic explains that the grant will enable her to continue working on a project that fascinates her and “represents recognition of my research activity and a commitment to scientific and personal development in an ideal setting.”

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common tumors in the western world and the second most frequent cause of cancer-related death. The death of a large proportion of patients is due to the development of metastasis in organs such as the liver and lungs. The researchers will attempt to unravel the dispersal mechanisms in an animal model of metastasis. “Our objective is to identify the genes responsible and also to define their functions and the signalling pathways involved”. Urosevic affirms that through the identification of genes and cellular mechanisms associated with the metastatic process, researchers will be able to address new avenues of investigation, “not only to propose new treatments but also to better classify patients when deciding on treatment options”.

The Fundació Olga Torres is a private non-profit organization devoted to research into cancer and the relation of this disease with immunological alterations. More information about the foundation at: http://www.fundacionolgatorres.org/

About IRB Barcelona

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) pursues a society free of disease. To this end, it conducts multidisciplinary research of excellence to cure cancer and other diseases linked to ageing. It establishes technology transfer agreements with the pharmaceutical industry and major hospitals to bring research results closer to society, and organises a range of science outreach activities to engage the public in an open dialogue. IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 researchers and more than 30 nationalities. Recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence since 2011, IRB Barcelona is a CERCA centre and member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
