Iproteos wins the 2nd RedEmprendia Prize for University Spin-Offs 2012

Iproteos, a spin-off from IRB Barcelona and the University of Barcelona, has been awarded the '2nd RedEmprendia University to Business Spin-off Prize 2012’, which was presented on Wednesday 28 November during the international ‘RedEmprendia Spin2012’ conference held in Madrid.

The “1st University to Business Spin-off Prize 2012”, awarded 25,000 euros and sponsored by PWC España, went to Xeiba Open Innovation Center, at the “Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico). Iproteos S.L. was presented 15,000 euros for the second prize, which was sponsored by NH Hotels. Finally, the third prize, amounting to 10,000 euros and funded by the Banesto Foundation, was awarded to Terravocado SAS, a Colombian company at the “Parc I de la Universidad de Antioquia”. Iproteos, which is based at the Barcelona Science Park (Catalan acronym PCB), competed with 14 proposals promoted by universities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, Peru and Portugal.

Iproteos came about from a technology transfer that was produced in Ernest Giralt’s lab at IRB Barcelona, and the University of Barcelona (UB), with the participation of the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation. Founded in 2011 by Teresa Tarragó – researcher at IRB Barcelona- and Ernest Giralt –coordinator of the Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Programme at the same institute and senior professor at the UB -, Iproteos seeks to develop and commercialize third generation drugs for diseases affecting the central nervous system.

RedEmprendia is an Ibero-American network of universities that aims to promote knowledge transfer, technology development, innovation and responsible entrepreneurship. It currently comprises 20 universities in 7 countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico and Portugal), Universia –the largest network of Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking universities–, and the Santander Bank, through its Global Santander Universities Division.
