The director of IRB Barcelona organises a series of conferences on the challenges faced by Catalan society if it is to become competitive and pioneering and attract talent.

The Research Commission of the Societat Econòmica Barcelonesa d’Amics del País (SEBAP), chaired by the director of IRB Barcelona, Joan J. Guinovart, has planned a series of conferences and debates on the knowledge society. "Knocking down the walls to build a knowledge society" will analyse the main challenges faced by Catalan society if it is to become competitive and innovative and attract and generate talent. This series of conferences is inspired by a campaign headed in the XIX century by SEBAP to knock down parts of the wall in the city’s centre to improve living conditions and favour growth. "In the XXI century we must identify and remove obstacles that may hinder the formation of a knowledge-based society in Catalonia" explains Guinovart. Open to the public and free of charge, the conference series will be held from March to June in the offices of SEBAP, in Barcelona.

The first of four debates, entitled "Generators of knowledge", will be held on Monday 23 March and will involve key figures from the three areas that form the research system in Catalonia: hospitals, universities, and the research centres set up by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) over the last ten years. Ramon Gomis, director of IDIPAPS-Hospital Clínic, Josep Joan Moreso, rector of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and Lluís Torner, director of the Institute of Photonic Sciences will discuss the generation and strengthening of knowledge at each of their organisations, the fields of expertise and features that differentiate and complement them, and the benefits of mutual collaboration.

The conference on 23 March will be followed by the session: "What is knowledge for?" on 27 April; "The laws of knowledge" in May; and "The globalisation of knowledge" in June.
