The Montserrat School in Cornellà opens the 'Joan Guinovart' laboratory in the framework of the Tandem Schools project
The new school lab has come about from the Escuelas Tándem (Tandem Schools) project, which is supported by IRB Barcelona and the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation.
The Montserrat School and IRB Barcelona have just brought the Tandem Schools Project to a close. This educational initiative has applied science as a core theme to enhance the innovative activities, academic results, prestige, and social cohesion of the school.
Run and financed by the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation, the project is one of the first tandems between a primary school and a scientific institute.
IRB Barcelona proposes activities targeted to a wide public audience during Science Week 2017.
The programme includes a visit by more than 100 school children to the centre, microtalks in pubs and debates on hot topics with well-known figures such as Andreu Mas-Colell and Isona Passola.
The activities offered by Science Week are included in the programme of the 1st ENABLE Symposium, aimed at young biomedical scientists, which will be held in Barcelona from 15 to 17 November.
The “IRB Barcelona Futur” fellowship is funded by donations given to the permanent fundraising campaign “Futur”, which supports the training of young scientists.
The first awardee is a 24-year-old student who graduated in Biomedicine and holds a Master’s from the University of Utrecht and the Gurdon Institute in Cambridge Cambridge.

It is a three-year project that forms part of the “Escoles Tàndem” (Tandem Schools) Programme promoted by the Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation.
It is the first tandem between a research centre and a primary school.
The school curriculum will be designed around biomedicine.
The Tandem Programme aims to improve academic results, provide added value to schools, and strengthen social cohesion.
