The inflamed Immune responses have evolved to protect injured tissue of adult homeothermic individuals from uncontrolled infection. Inversely correlated with the phylogenetic refinement of immune responses is the loss of regeneration characteristic of adult cold-blooded organisms. However, resident stem cells (SCs) in adult mammalian tissues support cell turnover under physiological conditions and are capable of regenerating tissue architecture in some instances. The adult mammalian brain harbors neural SCs that support continual neurogenesis and can respond to elimination of their progeny by regenerating the complete lineage. Because of their location, NSCs are isolated from the circulating immune system and, therefore, they represent an ideal system to test SC regulation by innate immunity and remote signaling. We have recently shown that, despite previous reports that circulating innate immune signals only exert detrimental effects on adult neurogenesis, systemic inflammation alerts adult NSCs and contributes positively to regeneration.
