PhD student Natalia Trempolec publishes two SnapShots about p38α targets

Three scientists working in the Signalling and Cell Cycle Laboratory, headed by Ángel R. Nebreda at IRB Barcelona, have recently published a SnapShot in the renowned journal Cell and are preparing a second one for February 14. Snapshots are reviews in an innovative format to present up-to-date tables of nomenclature and glossaries, full signalling pathways, and schematic diagrams of cellular processes. In this case, the review, with “la Caixa” PhD student Natalia Trempolec as first author, summarizes the known p38α targets, or substrates, and the cell signalling pathways involved. Belonging to the family of Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinases (MAPKs), p38α has been related mainly to the cellular response to stress; however, it is also implicated in cellular processes such as survival, proliferation and differentiation, all of which play crucial roles in diseases like cancer.

In this first installment, the researchers have compiled all validated substrates of p38α in a graphic manner. In the second review, they will detail the residues that are phosphorylated for each target protein and the functional consequences for the cell. Combined, these two presentations will provide a concise, comprehensive, practical and documented source of information on p38α substrates.

Ángel R. Nebreda’s group receives funding from the BBVA Foundation, the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, and the European Commission.

About IRB Barcelona

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) pursues a society free of disease. To this end, it conducts multidisciplinary research of excellence to cure cancer and other diseases linked to ageing. It establishes technology transfer agreements with the pharmaceutical industry and major hospitals to bring research results closer to society, and organises a range of science outreach activities to engage the public in an open dialogue. IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 researchers and more than 30 nationalities. Recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence since 2011, IRB Barcelona is a CERCA centre and member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
