The work of the Colorectal Cancer Laboratory published in Nature Genetics on the molecular classification of colon tumors has had a great impact on the media. The study shows that the malignancy of tumors lies in whether the cells surrounding the tumor are altered or not. The news highlights the promise that the results hold to develop a diagnostic test to predict the risk of metastasis in patients. Another striking result is the proposal to start clinical trials using inhibitors of an experimental drug that has proven to halt metastasis in mice.
