  • The International Society of Quantum Biology and Pharmacology (ISQBP) has recognized the outstanding contributions of Dr. Orozco, group leader of the Molecular Modelling and Bioinformatics at IRB Barcelona, to the field.
  • The award was presented at the 2026 ISQBP President's Meeting in Romania, held from 15 to 18 June.

Dr. Modesto Orozco has been presented with the 2026 ISQBP Award in Computational Biology in recognition of his outstanding contributions to decoding DNA structure and dynamics at multiple scales and in different genomic contexts.

The ISQBP was founded in 1970 to provide a forum for chemists, pharmacologists, and biologists to discuss and extend the impact of computational methodologies in the fields of biology, chemistry, medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, drug discovery, pharmacology, bioinformatics, genomics, and proteomics.

The ISQBP Award in Computational Biology is given biannually at the President’s Meeting to an individual who has performed high-quality research in the field.  As this year’s awardee, Dr. Orozco presented a plenary lecture at the meeting and received a plaque commemorating the award.

Dr. Orozco’s research activity is focused on the theoretical study of biological systems and is reflected in close to 500 papers published in international peer-reviewed journals of the highest impact. He holds numerous awards and prizes and is the founder of the IRB Barcelona spin-off Nostrum Biodiscovery, a company that leverages computational modelling and supercomputing to accelerate drug discovery.

About IRB Barcelona

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) pursues a society free of disease. To this end, it conducts multidisciplinary research of excellence to cure cancer and other diseases linked to ageing. It establishes technology transfer agreements with the pharmaceutical industry and major hospitals to bring research results closer to society, and organises a range of science outreach activities to engage the public in an open dialogue. IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 researchers and more than 30 nationalities. Recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence since 2011, IRB Barcelona is a CERCA centre and member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
